Video game reviews: Football Manager 2010 (PC/Mac)

Football Manager 2010 is the 5th game in the Football Manager series, released for the 09/10 football season. Released on the 30th of October 2009, Football Manager continues to dominate the football management simulation market.

This is down to the large fan base it has built up since the early days, back when it was known as Championship Manager. The reason for the change of name being that developers Sports Interactive split-up from publishers Eidos Interactive, losing the naming rights and having to re-brand the game as Football Manager under new publishers Sega. Championship Manager now gets developed by Beautiful Game Studios, but Football Manager is by far winning the head-to-head battle.

The game itself basically involves you taking control of (almost) whichever team you please, running the day-to-day affairs in the way you would if you were a real manager and trying to lead them to glory.

~~~ Installation ~~~
There are two methods for installing the game the, the first is the good old-fashioned way of using the disc.
Simply put the disc into your computer and install it the usual way.
It took me around 15 minutes to get the game completely installed on what is quite an old PC, running Windows XP.
The second method is by download the game, through software called Steam, which you will have to create an account with. I used the disc so don't know how long this would take, but it would be considerable longer as you will have to download the game first and then install. The advantage of this being you don't have to worry about losing or damaging the disc.
You can get updates for the game by searching for them at the start menu, which adds to the longevity of the game. I chose the disc method simply because I like to be able to see what I won and build up a collection.
~~~ Game Setup ~~~

Starting a game is quick and easy. You simply put in your details such as name, nationality, age, etc. You can also upload a photo of yourself into the game to add that extra bit of realism. This is very easy and you simply have to find the photo on your computer and select it.

Once all of this has been done you choose which team you want to manage, and what leagues and countries you want to be able to participate in once the game starts.

This choice could be quite important, because if you choose the English leagues and then after a season or two managing in England you want a change, you won't be able to move to say, Spain, if you haven't selected it.
