Limmy's Show is a sketch show starring Brian Limond, which is shown on the BBC, possibly only in Scotland. I don't think showing it in England would be too much of a success, not because it focuses on day-to-day goings on in Scotland (most of the sketches would fit in across the UK), but mainly because "Limmy's" accent might not be understood some of the time.
The show runs for 30 minutes and features a whole host of regular sketches, with characters, which feature in most episodes. There are some sketches which are just Limmy pointing things out which annoy him.
These recurring characters include:
Jacqueline McCafferty - Jacqueline used to be a junkie and is keen to point out she lost 3 years of her life on heroin and a further 5 on methadone. She is just trying to get on with her life, but has a habit of taking harmless comments out of context. The best Jacqueline sketch I've seen so far involves her trying to phone a taxi, but ends up getting into an argument with someone from the taxi company. Jacqueline sketches are usually funny and among the best in the show, but there are sometimes less-funny ones.
Adventure Call - playing on the ever-growing list of TV phone in games. Adventure call is a mix of these phone-in shows and the children's show Raven. The contestants however aren't children. This is my favourite sketch on the show, with one involving a caller who feels he has been cheated. This particular one was shown right at the beginning of the 3rd episode in the current series (1) and is probably the funniest thing I have seen on the TV this year - I recommend finding and watching it.
Mr Mulvaney - a paranoid businessman who tends to get himself involved in petty crimes. These crimes range from setting of work fire alarms to stealing chocolate bars from convenience stores. He is constantly playing out the conversation he expects to have with the police, hoping to convince them that he is innocent and that a businessman of his stature wouldn't be involved in such petty things. Usually quite amusing, but not laugh-out-loud funny.
There is usually a part of the show when the sketch is paused and Limmy walks onto the screen. At this point he gives the viewers some kind of task, such as telling everyone to not acknowledge knowing what The Shawshank Redemption is, just to confuse the non-watchers. I won't tell anymore, it'll spoil the enjoyment for us regular viewers.
Overall Limmy's Show is something I Sky+ each week. I look forward to watching it despite it not having the best material throughout the episodes. There are some really funny sketches though and this makes watching the lesser stuff worthwhile. Limmy isn't trying too hard and that makes the show even better. I highly doubt it's something that will get critical acclaim, but it's easy viewing and I enjoy it.
