Is The Princess and the Frog worthy enough to be considered to have the title of Disney Classic? Or is it a poor attempt to re-capture the old animation magic?

The Princess and the Frog

Thankfully the latter is not true. Princess and the Frog exerts itself as a cheeky but uplifting hour and a half experience that must be seen just for nostalgia’s sake. The old magic of Disney is here, bringing fantasy to the ordinary and having the ability to not only make fun but deeply involving stories but also likeable, well crafted characters to carry the burden of Disney’s always well constructed plot.

The Plot of The Princess and the Frog

To describe the plot of The Princess of the frog would ruin the amazing twist that ends the first act so do not worry it will not be spoiled here. The story concerns Tiana, a young black American raised in Jazz-era New Orleans. Working hard all her life to make her Dads dream of a restaurant become a reality she rarely has time to enjoy the rich culture of music and dance that New Orleans was experiencing at the time.

Enter Prince Naveen, a go lucky music lover who lives life without many concerns except where his next bit of money is coming from so he can blow it on luxuries. But that is not to say he is unkind for he often picks up a guitar to please the crowd and loves all aspects of song and dance.

If you’ve ever seen a Disney film you probably already know what’s going to happen to these characters but you will find no more information on the plot here. Suffice to say that the film does have its fair share of surprises keeping the film fresh setting it apart from the predictability of the other Disney classics which is no doubt an attempt to really cement Disney back to its animation stardom. This, thankfully for the audience, worked really well.

Voice Acting in The Princess and the Frog

The acting is your usual Disney affair. The characters are well rounded and secretly complex which allows for some good characterisation. The recent TV starlet Anika Noni Rose gives a surprising performance as Tiana giving some real heart to Tiana in both dialogue and singing making her character practically leap off the screen. The hardly A-list Bruno Campos gives Prince Naaven the perfect cheeky persona showing Disney’s skill at finding just the right voice actor regardless of
