Time to get on the road and see what it offers you. The road trip is so classic to the American culture. It is a time for many great times, sights, and adventures. That being said it is very important to take a little time to prepare for the road trip to prevent it from becoming a series of disasters.
First lets start with your vehicle. If you ensure your vehicle is up to date with its maintenance then you will prevent a very expensive disaster. Ensure that you have a recent oil change prior to the trip or plan to take time from your trip to plan on it. Check your fluid levels and windshield blades. Check your tire treads and lastly check the vehicle handbook for any scheduled maintenance issues.
A few items to put in the vehicle for both ease of the trip and being prepared for the unexpected things that life has to offer. A general purpose firstaid kit should be sufficient for most injuries that can occur on any given day. Snacks and sanitary napkins help to get through the long stretches between meals. If everyone has a different mood about the music in the car then an ipod or cd player is a must. Small electronic games or an ebook reader also helps to pass the time on the road.
While part of the adventure of a road trip is unexpected encounters it is important to have some sort of plan. Having a plan can reduce the negative unexpected encounters can reduce the grief that can occur. Bring a map or gps system to avoid getting totally lost. This can be useful in remote areas that have extreme distances between them. In some of these areas there can be two hundred miles between towns. Some are courteous enough to to put up signs that warn you that there are no gas stations for the next two hundred miles and they are very serious. Take time to look at maps of the area that you are traveling to know what to expect while traveling in any given area. Keep a cell phone just in case you need any assistance on any issues that crop up.
These are just a few basic suggestions of what you will need on a road trip. Each trip has its own needs and considerations. The road trip is a great American adventure and can be an unforgettable experience. With proper planning these experiences will be enjoyable. While having a plan is important, it is also important to be flexible to allow for those unexpected discoveries that make the road trip the adventure that it is.
