Good resources for dream interpretation

by L.C.

Created on: February 13, 2010

If you are interested in interpreting your dreams, there are a number of useful resources available to you. Many bookshops now have entire sections devoted to dream interpretation, while special shops also exist that carry titles that are harder to find. Of course, with the internet, it is possible to order nearly any book and have it delivered to your home.  In this article I will present the two books I generally refer to when interpreting my dreams, as well as some websites I feel could be helpful.

The first book I would recommend is the first dream dictionary I ever owned, “Your Dream Interpreter” by Tony Crisp. The book is quite slim, which makes it convenient for travelling or to look up your dreams during the morning commute on the bus, as I do. The beginning of the book presents a number of great exercises to help not only remember your dreams but also interpret them accurately. It also has sections devoted to specific themes that often come up in dreams, such as sexuality. Also included is information regarding recurring dreams and nightmares. Next, the book contains a considerably extensive list of symbols that might appear in a dream. These are organised alphabetically, and there is an index at the back of the book. Sprinkled through the pages are various personal accounts of dreams or interesting facts.

The second book I would recommend is a more extensive dictionary, “The Illustrated Dream Dictionary” by Pamela Ball. If I can’t find a symbol in the first dictionary, or I have the time to do some reading and explore a dream at length, I will use this book. I will also make reference to it when I am really uncertain of a dream’s meaning and I need a variety of possible interpretations. This book is ideal because three explanations of a symbol are presented: an obvious explanation, an interpretation that explores the meaning of the symbol and views things from a psychological standpoint, and finally a sentence giving the esoteric or spiritual meaning of the symbol. There is also a great introduction which deals with important themes in dreams, such as the ego, the anima and animus and the wise old man.

After the introduction is a dictionary containing over 10 000 dream symbols and their meanings. The dictionary is organised in categories, the first being animals and the last being elements and materials. It is very rare that a symbol in one of my dreams cannot be found in this dictionary. There is also an index
