How to beat jetlag

Jet lag can be overcome by careful planning and careful flying.

Firstly, it's in the booking of your flight. Chose a flight that either allows you to start a full day in the city of your destination, or go straight to bed on your arrival. If you can sleep on the plane, even if it's in 2-3 hour bursts, take the first option. When you leave the plane, it's like you're starting a new day. Treat it like a new day. Feel rejuvenated and take on the sights and sounds of your chosen destination. Make your first day a big day, and by the time 9pm rolls around, you'll be ready for a good, deep night's sleep, keeping you going for the rest of your vacation.

If you go for the second option, when you leave the plane and going straight to bed once you've arrived at your accommodation, your body clock with quickly adjust to the new city's time clock and you'll appreciate your travels without feeling constantly sleepy.

Secondly, keep yourself hydrated on the plane. Avoid alcohol at all costs, especially if your flight is over 12 hours long. Insist on more water than the flight attendants offer, and eat in moderation.

Get out of your seat regularly for walks within the plane. Go to the bathroom, talk to other passengers, stand up and don't be stagnant. The more you can get the blood to flow around your body, the more refreshed you will feel at the end of your flight.

Dress comfortably. Don't wear tight belts, high heel shoes, fitted apparel... Pack a few on-board light layers that you can strip off when it's too hot, or add to when it's too cold. Keep your body temperature as even as possible to avoid excess stress on your body. But remember to have the right comfort level of clothing with you for your chosen destination.

Avoiding jet lag is common sense. If you know you can't sleep on a plane properly, but know that you will need to to take on the challenges of your journey, throw in some sleeping pills to help you get some blissful sleep. If you know that you have a meeting 2 hours after you land, ensure that you look bright-eyed and bushy-tailed when you exit the plane to show your colleagues how dynamic you are. If you need to drink alcohol on the plane, just drink one maybe two to get you to nigh-nigh land. Avoiding jet lag is knowing your body and what it can take, and planning accordingly. Safe traveling.
