“Blessed (happy, to be envied and spiritually prosperous, with life-joy and satisfaction in God’s favor and salvation, regardless of their outward conditions) are the poor in spirit (the humble, who rate themselves insignificant), for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Mt. 5:3 AMP). These are the words of Jesus as He taught the multitudes on the mountain. To be humble, one has to look at himself as very insignificant. “…the poor in spirit” means that we must always realize that without God in our lives we cannot achieve much. The humble person will always be willing to place God first in his or her life. Whenever we place God first in our lives, God will be glorified and He will reward us by bringing transformation into our circumstances.
“For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” There is no lack in the kingdom of heaven. There is no sickness or disease in the kingdom of heaven. Neither is there poverty in the kingdom of heaven. This means that the man who humbles himself will be eligible for all that is in the kingdom of heaven. Humility will allow him to be able to walk in prosperity, health and blessing. Why is this so? Because, this is how the kingdom of God operates.
The kingdom of God does not operate like the world system. No! It operates by the laws that the King of the kingdom sets into force. Being humble will cause the blessings of God to follow us wherever we go. Humility in the work place will move the hand of God to cause promotion to be granted us because as the Scriptures said, “For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: He putteth down one and setteth up another” (Ps. 75:6-7 KJV). The Word of God says, “By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches and honor and life” (Pr. 22:4 KJV). Some persons desires God to promote then in life, but they are not willing to pay the price of humility. The Word of God says, “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord and He shall lift you up” (Ja. 4:10 KJV).
Humility will cause us not to experience embarrassment. “But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shall thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee” (Lk. 14:10 KJV). To be proud may mean great embarrassment. We must humble ourselves in everything we do, knowing that as we do so, the Lord will exalt us in due season. Jesus humbled Himself even to the point of death and so God exalted Him.
Let us follow the example of the Master, knowing that as we do so, the Lord will exalt us also in due time.
