Our lives stretch out before us like an untraveled path. We can look back and see where we have been, but we can only wonder what life holds in store for us as we look ahead to the future. Seeing past the present is difficult, and for this reason I believe it is important to “decorate your life” so that you are equipped for whatever may come.
A search for the appropriate embellishments has led me to Ephesians 6:13-17. Listed in these verses are all the “decorations” we need to face the future.
“Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take up the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;”
In order to “decorate your life” with the embellishments mentioned in these Bible verses, one must first understand what they represent.
Belt of truth – Knowing the truth about God, who He is, what He has done for us, what He promises to do for us and what He has revealed to us about ourselves and our need for Him.
Breastplate of righteousness – The righteousness of Jesus that lives in me and all believers.
Sandals of peace – The peace that comes from trusting and following God as I seek the path He has set before us.
Shield of faith – Belief that God is in control of every situation and that He will keep His promises.
Helmet of salvation – The eternal forgiveness for our sins through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the Cross.
Sword of the spirit, the word of God – The Bible and everything that is written in it.
The “decorations” of God’s armor bring victory because they are more than just a protective covering. They are a way of life, exemplified by the life of Jesus Christ. Adorning these “decorations” do not guarantee a trouble-free life but instead of life of victory in the midst of trials. Therefore, we can face the future unafraid – “decorated” with the armor of God.
