Survivor Heroes vs Villains Samoa: Week 1 recap

by Lynette Alice

Created on: February 12, 2010

Survivor Season 20 Heroes versus Villains located in Samoa delivered a healthy dose of Boston Rob Mariano and enough of Jessica "Sugar" Kiper to potentially set the stage for one of the most memorable seasons of the hit reality show in a very long time. The premise this year is simple and nothing new - take favorites from the past and throw them all to the wolves with the hopes that sparks fly. Unlike past seasons however, Survivor season 20 added the good guys versus the bad guys twist by by creating the heroes and villains teams. While the polls are still out, season 20 looks like it might be a return to the type of Survivor season that made the show a winner in the past,

Season 20 also returns to an island setting with all the action taking place in Samoa where the teams were for the most part re-introduced to a familiar camp on the beach setting. As the four choppers made their way to the shooting location, several contestants expressed their views and feelings about taking the challenge one more time. As could be expected -and all too on cue it would seem - the heroes talked about their excitement to play again and how great their teammates were. The villains went on about themselves, and how they were going to win. Russell immediately set the tone by letting his ego get out of control and constantly proclaiming he was the king, it was his game, he was the best ever. His villain teammate Boston Rob was a little different than most remember showing a little humility and reminding everyone that his life has changed a lot the last few years and he and his wife Amber (a former cast mate) had a kid and that so far as Survivor goes he's already been there done that as he is appearing on the show for the third time. James, appearing for the third time as well, let everyone know he's learned a lot since the season he was voted off at tribal council while holding not one, but two immunity idols he failed to play.

The tone for the first reward challenge was full out intensity rather than the somewhat lackadaisical approach seen in previous shows featuring returning players. Stephanie's shoulder was dislocated in the very first stage of the first challenge, enough of an injury to legitimately leave the game. Instead she had it popped back in the socket and stuck it out. Rupert broke a toe in at least two places as it took on a bit of a "J" shape. Sandra reminded everyone why she is one of the most hated players in Survivor history by pulling off Sugar's bikin top
