As a former sales associate of Cutco knives, I can honestly say I have never come across knives as good as theirs. Part of my job was to be familiar with other brands. So, I became acquainted with brands such Henckels, which any local store will laud as their best knife. But, from my experiences, Cutco far outstrips them.
Do your steak knives actually ‘cut’ your steak? Or just shred it? Are tomatoes sooner squashed than sliced? When I sold Cutco knives, I used several presentations. In one, I used Cutco steak knives to cut through a piece of leather in a single stroke. More impressive than that though, the water in a glass on the table didn’t budge. I also used their knife, the slicer, which is designed specifically for fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes, to cut a tomato. It was possible with the knife, to cut a slice of tomato thin enough to be transparent. The knives are fabulously sharp and have a unique grip shape that nestles in your hand to prevent slipping or discomfort. Trademark to their knives though is a unique blade called the Double-D edge. DD stands for double-durable. It resembles a serrated blade, but not quite. Recessed cutting edges protected by points enable the knife to cut fluidly, like a straight edge, in three directions: forward, backwards, and down. And it is amazingly sharp. For the all-thumbs progeny, I would advice extreme caution!
What of its quality and variety? The knives are made of very high grade steel that doesn’t rust and is dishwasher safe. No more hand-washing. The handle is a high-grade plastic that doesn’t absorb moisture. It’s securely attached to the blade, so the knife doesn’t eventually loosen. However, Cutco does not have a great variety. At most, it only has about 20 different knife styles. Which any chef will tell you is not that many. The knives’ designs are extremely unique. One of their trademark knives is called the ‘spatula spreader’. Don’t let the name fool you, it’s still a knife. The shape of the steel is like a large, stretched oval. On one edge it has a Double-D edge. And, the blade is flexible. This makes it the perfect brownie knife. Cut it with the edge, and then use its flexibility to serve. Cutco has other knives, each with unique features designed specifically for their purpose.
Surely, with all these high-grade and unique features, the price isn’t cheap? Sadly, here lies Cutco’s greatest fault. Aware of their eye-brow raising prices, Cutco loves to hold the customer in suspense. They awe them with feature after feature and benefit after benefit to ease the price. However, ultimately, nearly every customer has agreed the price was worth the value. Their prices are around twice the price of Henckels, which is not a cheap product. The value, many customers agree on, is five times to ten times more than Henckels.
Despite the price, Cutco knives are incomparable and unrivaled.
