Poetry: Phobias

by Jane Prinsep

Created on: February 11, 2010

Something so innocent
A source of squealing delight
Giddy, skidding children
Fearless, wintertime fun

Naked eyes cannot see
What lies in wait, silently;
A callous capability
To bestow misery and pain

A simple walking motion
Forgotten; now replaced
By muscle memory
Flashbacks of fear

Snapping bones
The curtain of agony falls
Over failing vision
And starbursts of pain

A waiting room
Tears masked by shock
White walls surrounding
My darkest thoughts

Weeks of disability
Twenty-four hour targets
Mini-goals struck off
The calendar of hope

Metal foreign bodies
Unwanted but necessary
Twisting and crunching
Coaxing bone to heal

Constant snowfall
Temperatures dip
Imprisoning me
With my fear

I see your mean spirit
In certain sunlit angles
I catch you mocking me
Silently glistening

No matter; one day
I will conquer you
Broken, not beaten
The door will open

I will be that child
Skidding once more
Tears of fear will
Break into laughter
