Video game reviews: Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics (PS3)

It seems that every time an Olympic Games comes around, there is a video game which accompanies it.  These games are rarely enjoyable to play.  This year, we get Vancouver 2010: Olympic Games.  Can this one end the trend?

GAME PLAY

There are plenty of different games, or events, both Men's and Women's.  Each one has its own control scheme, but they all have two things in common.  The first is that the controls are very easy to figure out.  Secondly, despite their ease in learning, they are nearly impossible to master.  In some games, many of the controls tend to have a little bit of a delayed reaction to them.

There is good news for Vancouver 2010: Olympic Games.  There are plenty of ways to play the Olympic Games.  First, players can either play these Olympic Games as they were intended to be played, meaning, one event at a time, trying to win as many gold medals as possible.  The other mode available is called, "Challenge."  In this mode, players do not compete for the best scores, or the fastest times, they simply need to meet specific criteria in events, in order to unlock further challenges.

Those who prefer to play games by themselves, or with a small group of friends at home, Vancouver 2010: Olympic Games offers a standard traditional mode of playing.  More ambitious gamers can play online in any number of ways.  This is interesting, as it really captures the spirit of the Olympic Games, allowing people all over the world to compete against each other.

GRAPHICS

While there are no inherent flaws, graphically speaking, the entire game has an unfinished feel to it.  From menus to characters to backgrounds, the graphics all look half a generation old.  For those who don't care as much for graphics, this will not be a deterrent, but the rest are apt to be reasonably disappointed.

AUDIO

All the sound effects are exactly what one would expect.  The background music, however, is not.  There is something off about hard rocking music accompanying the Olympic Games.

OVERALL

This game is likely to gain some degree of popularity, simply because it is an Olympic Game which will be available at a time when Olympic Games will very much be on people's minds.  On the other hand, this really is not much of a game.
