How to get the most from your stay in a luxury hotel

by Len Di Gregorio

Luxury hotels are all about that – luxury. They possess both the ability and the desire to cater to all of our needs – so allow them to do just that. While you may find yourself in unchartered waters, when it comes to being pampered, catered and spoiled to some degree (assuming that the majority of us are not rock stars, although at times we may fantasize and even act out being one), knowing what to expect will make staying at a luxury hotel that much more enjoyable.

So let them gather your luggage from your car. Let them ask you if you need assistance with that luggage, or anything else for that matter. Let them valet park your car. Let them attend to any special needs or concerns that you may have. Let them upgrade your room, if at all possible. Let them recommend local activities of interest, places to go, and people to see. Let them offer you special deals, discounts and coupons. Let them make your dinner reservations. Let them give you a courtesy ride to a nearby destination of your choice, or to a recommendation of theirs. Let them ask you if everything has been to your satisfaction, and definitely mention to them if something is not up to your (or their) standards. A truly luxury hotel will not only be willing to assist you, they welcome the opportunity to make your visit as enjoyable and memorable as possible. It’s a simple formula actually – you desire comfort and luxury, and they want your business. And your repeat business, for that matter.

Responding to such attention and quality of service is essential in enjoying the total experience of your stay, regardless of the length of your visit - an evening, a few nights or even several weeks. Don’t ask or expect something they cannot provide. Don’t be rude or pretentious. Don’t forget to be courteous. Don’t forget to tip all of the staff that assists you during your vacation or business travel. Don’t forget to fill out a survey if applicable, as the business and staff are being rated and monitored, so to speak, and their livelihood could potentially be in the balance. Don’t forget to be honest and sincere at all junctures of your stay – this is always a good philosophy for life in general. Don’t forget to use as many hotel amenities as you desire. And most importantly, don’t forget to enjoy yourself and take it all in.

A mutual respect for one another is not only appreciated, but it will go a long way towards a memorable stay at a luxury hotel. Most likely, your visit will seem too short, and the general consensus that you missed out on several worthwhile activities and experiences will be common, providing that both you and the hotel staff present your respective “A games.” If all goes well, you just may experience that burning desire to plug in that Rickenbacker 12 string electric guitar. Just make sure you ask for assistance, if needed, in bringing that classic instrument up to your suite.
