Freelance writing is one of the easiest careers to break into simply because of the impact of technology on the industry. Freelancers have the ability to work from home and of course to work around their individual schedules, so there is constant interest in what it takes to become a freelance writer.
The following list was compiled to give those on the outside looking in can have an idea of the things you need to become a freelancer.
The Basic Tools
All freelance writers need to have a reliable computer and a fast internet connection. These are the very basic tools of the trade. Because most of your work will be done online it is wise to invest in a dependable broadband internet provider.
Writing Skill
If you are interested in writing for a living hopefully you have a good command of grammar and spelling. Beyond these simple requirements, internet writers also need to have an idea of how SEO techniques affect the searchbility of their work. The right keywords and even the use of images can improve how easily readers find your articles or blog posts.
Drive to Succeed
Without the drive to succeed freelance writers might be tempted to give up early on in the game. It takes time to earn money from online writing and it can feel like there is a very poor correlation between effort and reward in the beginning. However the situation should improve as your skill level increases and of course as you find higher paying jobs.
Time to Dedicate to Building a Portfolio
A sizable portfolio doesn’t simply materialize. It must be added to and worked on over several months, but the constant effort pays great dividends over time. Freelance writers should choose where they decide to keep their portfolio wisely. Some sites pay for submissions but the passive income aspect pales in comparison to other opportunities. A healthy balance between upfront payments and a steadily growing passive income stream is probably the most attractive objective.
Savings to Launch Your Career
If your goal is to start writing full time then you need to ensure that you have the savings to cover your ongoing expenses as well as some money stashed aside for unexpected emergencies. This will help to keep the stress at bay while you attempt to build your portfolio. Read How Much Money Should Be in Your Emergency Fund.
If you think you have what it takes to become a success at freelance writing then all that’s left to do is start writing!
