Getting published can prove to be difficult but if you start small you have a better chance of making it. Write a story for a local paper. If it is a good human interest story they will likely publish it. You might not get paid but at least you will have a start. These stories usually don't take a lot of time to write so you won't have a lot of time tied up.
There are also several places on the Internet where you can submit articles. Do your research and you will find several places where they accept freelance work. This too will give you a boost which you can add to your resume.
Trying to go straight for a book is next to impossible unless you have extremely good contacts. Your chances will be much greater if you can show where you have previously published your work. Starting out small might give you the right avenue to eventually getting a publisher to look at your work.
