Can a loving God create hell?

Hell in the Bible is known as three names; these are namely: Gehenna, Sheol and Hades. All these three names are referred to in the Bible as the place of the dead. Can a loving God create hell? The answer is yes. God never created hell for us. No! It was created for the devil and his angels but because of our disobedience to God, the Lord will allow us His loving creation to go there.

In the book of Genesis, we see that God made the earth and all upon it. The Word of God says, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light and there was light” (Gen. 1:1-3 KJV). Throughout Genesis chapter 1, we see God creating things upon the earth. Over into the New Testament the Word of God says, “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the Word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear” (Heb. 11:3 KJV). Hell is in the earth also, so if God created the earth, He must be the one who made hell.

It is not God’s will for anyone of us His loving creation to go to hell. Because it is not His will for us to go to hell, God has made provision in the form of His Son Jesus Christ for us. The Word of God says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life”(St. Jn. 3:16 KJV). The word ‘perish’ that is used in this context is speaking of a total separation from God. Friend, to go to hell means a total separation from God. The phrase ‘everlasting life’ means a life of peace and tranquility that is free of death and other destructive forces forever with God. Friend, this is spending all eternity in heaven with God. Yes friend, God is a loving God, but He is also a God of judgment and this means that He will always judge sin.

Hell is a place of great torments and again I will say this, “It is not the will of God that any of us should end up into a place like this, but if we are disobedient to God we will go there.” Jesus spoke of hell as a place of unquenchable fire and where the worms do not die, where there is weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth. He also called hell a place of outer darkness and a place of gloom.

Though it is not God’s will for any of us to go there, we must be careful how we live our lives here on earth while we are alive. We must take care to walk in obedience to God and His word. A life of sin will cause us to go to hell. To avoid hell, there is only one remedy.

Jesus says in His word, “I am the way, the truth and the life…” (St. Jn. 14:16 KJV). Jesus is the only way to avoid hell. It is because of Jesus that the Father will not send us to hell. He died for our sins and thus making peace with God on our behalf. If we reject Jesus, we are bound to end up in a burning hell.
