This will not be viewed as a very popular opinion, and it might even offend some people. I don't want to hear the bad words, but I hate hearing the bleeps. I feel that television writers should try to write their scripts and dialogue without using swear words at all. Most of the time the words aren't necessary for getting the point of the story across anyway. A lot of times the words are used for shock value. It grabs the viewers attention if they weren't really following along with what the show was about. If you are casually watching something while reading the paper, and an off color word pops up it usually catches your attention. What? Did they really just say that on national television?
I think the "bleep factor" is just plain annoying. Most of the time when the words are bleeped out you already know what they were saying anyway. You can either read the actors lips or you can use your imagination on what was being said. Reality television is the worst offenders of the bleep moments. I am glad they bleep the words, because I don't really care to hear a lot of bad words, and I really don't want my children to think it is okay to use that language. I usually end up counting the times they have to use the bleep button or I just plain shut it off because all the bleeping noise just gives me a headache.
Now I am sure there are people throwing things at their computers right now. I know kids these days hear all kinds of bad words at school and on the bus. I just feel that if television didn't promote the words in their popular shows it might send a message that not everyone needs to swear to get a point across. These words become so everyday for people that they just don't see a big deal about hearing them on television or everywhere else they go.
In the olden days of television characters weren't allowed to sleep in the same bed let alone utter an unflattering swear word. Those days weren't so bad. You didn't have to have parental locks on you televisions and you didn't have to worry when you left the room that your kids would be subjected to something you wold rather they learn later than sooner. I am a strong supporter of bringing back more morals, better words and less bleeping.
