Poetry: The love of a lifetime

by Stacey Torres

Created on: February 10, 2010   Last Updated: March 23, 2010

We both just assumed it was all over

That we were in the twilight of our lives

And no matter how hard we tried

We would never find that one special

Love of a lifetime.

Both of us just assumed we had done it all

Seen it all

Had it all

Loved it all

And it was all just a myth, that

Love of a lifetime.

Both of us were resigned to finish

The balance of our lives existing

As people our age often do, watching

Everyone else dance down the aisle with their

Love of a lifetime.

Both of us felt we had missed the bus

The one that would take us to

That level of bliss and eternal happiness

With the one we would call our one and only

Love of a lifetime.

Both of us were too blind to see that

We had not, in fact missed the bus

But merely missed our stop

Where there at the curb, patiently waiting was our

Love of a lifetime.

Both of us chose to not give up just yet

And stand side by side

Under the streetlight in the twilight of our lives

Gazing dimly at each other and knowing this is our

Love of a lifetime.
