Sucking up to the boss is a good thing, if you are the boss. It isn't such a good thing when your co-workers are watching. Sucking up to the boss probably won't get you the promotion or raise you are looking for. The boss will love you giving him/her such great attention. In fact, it could hurt your chances of moving up. If your boss considers you an asset right where you are, they won't even look at where you could go.
Your co-workers will recognize your sucking up to the boss for what it is. It is a cheap attempt at climbing the ladder on the heads of everyone else in the office. Your co-workers will not respect you in the least. Chances are, your boss won't respect you either. If you want respect, you have to earn it.
Your co-worker's are people you have to spend a lot of time with everyday. You don't want to get them upset because you are sucking up to the boss. If you do suck up to the boss, it is inevitable your co-workers will hate seeing you come in the door each morning. They will avoid being anywhere near you and that is not a good thing. Work environments are generally oriented towards team work. If your co-workers dislike you because you suck up to the boss, chances are, the teamwork will suffer and so will the companies profits.
Sucking up to the boss is generally very noticeable. You can't sneak it in on the sly. When you do it, everyone will notice, including your boss. Your boss will notice enough so he/she takes note of who to dump extra work on. The more you do for your boss trying to make an impression, the more work he/she will give you. The problem is he/she knows just because you suck up doesn't mean you are a good candidate for promotion or a raise. In fact, it could have your boss looking right past you because the sucking up makes you look like is the only way for you to get ahead.
The only thing sucking up does for you is to give you more work to do. Other than that, it really serves no good purpose. Instead of sucking up to the boss and making everyone else angry with you, learn more about your job. Go back to school and get more skills or have more confidence in the skills you already have. That will get you much further than sucking up to the boss.
