Memoirs: Love at first sight

by Frankie Haney

Yes indeed, love can happen at first sight.

There was his face looking back at me from my computer screen.  There was just something so striking in his eyes and that quirky little smile that bent up on one corner.  He was wearing a ball cap and looked just a mite too cocky for his own good, but he was the one for me.  I had been searching over various internet dating sites for several months.  I chatted with a few here and there and even dated a couple of nice guys that I had met online.  All of us seemed to be lonely and looking for that one true love, but afraid to commit.

I remember this particular website was not one of my all time favorites, so I didn't visit it too often.  They required a detailed list of questions be completed when you sign up, so they could help you find compatible prospects.  I was sort of running on empty one day, if you know what I mean.  All this looking and messaging and trying to figure out what to say and what not to say, become little more than robotic after awhile.  You start to wonder if there are any real people out there actually looking for a mate, or are they just there to play  games.

The website where he appeared was one that sent you a handful of pictures each day and you voted yes, or no.  If you vote yes, then you can follow up with a quick message to contact that person if you want.  I was going along, systematically clicking no...no...no...then when I saw the face before me that I liked, I clicked yes.  The website message came up that he had also clicked yes on my picture.  Luck would have it that he was online the same time that I was, and before I knew it, I received a message from Mr. Cocky Smile.  I answered, and he fired another one back.  And we went back and forth, getting acquainted for a good hour.  This went on for a couple of days and then led to phone conversations.  We finally agreed to meet in person.  I was so nervous, that I almost backed out several times that day.  We decided to meet for coffee at one of those fast food/convenience store set ups.  I preferred a very public place for safety reasons.  You never really know what can happen on those first encounters, and I wanted to feel secure.  I had gone on a blind date once with a guy named Frenchy and I couldn't wait for it to end.  So, I thought coffee ought to be easy, and if things didn't go well,  I could make a fast getaway.

When he pulled his car up next to mine in front of the restaurant, I pretty well knew what was going to happen.  I was hooked.  Line and sinker and the whole darn tackle box.  We went inside together, both of us nervous and overly polite.  I can't remember much about the coffee, or even if I drank it.  Heck, I can't even remember much about the conversation.  But, I did know something deeply profound was happening to me, and as it turned out, to both of us.  We have been together nearly every day since and don't ever plan on being apart again.  Love at first sight does indeed happen, just that fast.
