Reflections: Love at first sight

by Makavelli Knight

Created on: February 09, 2010

At one time in my life, I truly believe that it would take a miracle for me to find true love. After all, I’ve had been single for many years, broke, and couldn’t get a date. I felt only people with money had all the fun and happiness. Last year, my thinking change. I found my queen and she made me into a believer of love at first sight.

I was invited to an all black attire gala bash to celebrate Olivia’s 25th Birthday in the autumn of 2008. She was a good friend of mine in high school. The party was at a nice lounge in midtown Manhattan. The place was packed with dozens of people on the dance floor moved beneath swirling dimmed lights as hip-hop and R&B music blared. I felt cool in my black Sean John button down shirt and matching black Rocker jeans. I was in a very good mood because I recently started doing well in real estate. I was having a drink with one of my friends when all the guests were clapping and singing a Stevie Wonder-like Happy Birthday to Olivia. She looked great in her designer black Gucci dress. As she was blowing out the candles, I caught her best friend taking glimpses at me. She’s an olive-skinned Latina with long wavy hair and hazel eyes. I was almost astonished that she was checking me out. I walked over to thank Olivia for inviting me and say happy birthday to her. Olivia appreciated it and she introduced her best friend to me, Melanie. She smiled, and said hi so softly. It was love at first sight, and I prayed that we linked up before the night ended.

I went to the outdoor patio of the lounge near the DJ’s booth to take pictures with a few friends and dance. I was still thinking about Melanie and couldn’t see her with all these partygoers jumping around. After dancing with this short light skinned woman with blonde hair, I walked over to the bar to get another drink. I saw Olivia in the center of the dance floor dancing with her boyfriend, but no sign of Melanie. The DJ put on some New jack swing hits, and someone tapped me softly on the back. I turned around and there was Melanie. She looked so sexy in her tight black blouse that showed off her perfectly toned belly and full breasts, as well as her black tight jeans.

“Can I get this dance, Amare?” She asked.

            “Sure, baby girl.” I answered.
