The best and worst of 2010 Super Bowl commercials

by Michael Strauss

Created on: February 08, 2010

Despite the lack of some perennial classic Superbowl commercials, including traditional Masterlock commercial, and an usually low number of commercials from McDonald’s and Coke, the majority of Superbowl XLIV commercials continued the tradition of making the breaks between the Superbowl just as fun to watch as the big game.  Without a doubt, the clear winner in the Superbowl commercial war this year was Doritos, with a slew of commercials ranging from slightly amusing to laugh out loud.  In the loser column, BoostMobile produced a single commercial that clearly tried to be funny and failed epically.  Listed below are the best and worst that were broadcast this year.

Winners

Snickers Betty White – Snickers only had one commercial this year, but it was probably the absolute best of single commercial during the Superbowl.  Betty White stars in the commercial as herself, playing a game of tackle football with a bunch of mid-20’s or early 30’s men.  The best moment has got to be when she is full out tackled into the mud.  It was great to see the old gal hogging the spotlight in this laugh out loud commercial.

Hyundai Brett Favre Ten Years Later – Brett Favre clearly has a sense of humor over his retirement indecisions and his age.  In this brilliant Hyundai commercial, we see a vision of the future where a 50 year old Brett Favre is winning an MVP trophy and still unsure whether he will retire.  The message is funny and timely and it was one of the few car commercials that wasn’t painful to watch.

Doritos Dog Collar – Doritos ran four commercials this year and all were good, though two were truly excellent.  The Doritos commercial where the pre-school kid dresses down his mother’s boyfriend, laying down the ground rules (“You don’t touch my mother”, “You don’t touch my Doritos”) was great, but the dog collar bit was better.  In this glorious commercial, a man mocks a dog with an anti-barking collar.  The dog turns the tables by putting the collar on the man and then barking.  It is pure comedic gold.

Budweiser House of Beer – The commercial starts with an outside image of a house made entirely of Budweiser cans and bottles.  A woman compliments him on recycling by using used beer cans.  The obvious, but still hilarious, joke is that the beer containers are not used.  The remainder of the commercial involves
