                           Preparing Military Children For Relocation

As a military spouse, migrating is like walking a tight rope. There are tasks such as assisting your spouse with retrieving and returning gear . In addition there is always the responsibility of coming up with a budget for the move ,receiving clearance from housing and mopping up other odds and ends . Indeed, it is truly nerve-racking . However, in the midst of these things happening, what about the children?

They have grown so accustomed to living in one area.  Now as a parent,  you're bursting their bubble and telling them it is time to relocate again.  Here are some tips on how to prepare kids for relocation:

Step 1- Formulate a strategy.  Attempts to relocate at the last minute is not only a hassle for you and your spouse. It also puts a huge strain on the children.  If possible, a moving plan should be created at least three weeks prior to it actually happening. This will help the entire family slowly prepare themselves for relocation.

Step 2 -  Speak with your children in reference to the move. Enlighten them on what it means for them to be a part of military life. Sometimes children see their parents and their surroundings but don't completely understand what's occurring.  Explain to them why the move must take place and what to expect once it happens.

Step 3-  Ask the kids to write a list of what they would like to do prior to the move.  Most children in this situation like to visit a particular place one last time.  Set up a designated day and time to take your kids out for this trip. Make it something that the entire family can treasure by taking pictures, souvenirs and other items that everyone can cherish.

Kids also have friends that they have made in school and throughout the neighborhood. Encourage them to talk to buddies that they have made throughout the years. Advise them to jot down contact information, so they never lose touch with friends.

Step 4- Have the children make a bag full of items that they can use at their leisure.  Road trips, excursions to the airport , or even  a ride in the U-Haul can cause kids to fidget and ask if they're there yet.  To give you and your spouse a piece of mind, it is best to have the children pack portable games, toys, books and even candy. These items are generally excellent at creating a diversion until you arrive at your destination.

Step 5- Get your children involved!  The worst thing to do when preparing for relocation is lift  boxes while your kids sit on the couch and play PS3. Have them help with small, yet productive errands. This helps to keep everyone active and completing a mission as a family. Hooah!
