How to lower your credit card debt

by Gordon Hamilton

How to lower your credit card debt is a consideration which is driving millions of people to distraction and even despair. The debt which they have previously accumulated does not appear to be declining despite the fact that they may very well be making the regular, required monthly repayments and they are finding themselves at a loss for what to do next.

The principal reason why credit card debt does not appear to be declining to any significant extent is when one makes only the minimum required payment each month. This is because most often the minimum monthly repayment takes account only of the interest charged that month plus a miniscule amount of the capital. On significant levels of credit card debt, this can mean that it could take decades to lower your credit card debt to zero and repay the amount outstanding on the card in full.

The first and perhaps most obvious way in which it is possible to lower your credit card debt is by making more than the required monthly minimum repayment. This would mean that the entire amount paid over and above the minimum monthly repayment would be used to reduce the capital balance outstanding. Unfortunately, where one only pays a little bit more than the required amount each month, the same problem regarding the time which it will take to repay the balance in full may very well apply.

The second way in which you can seek to lower your credit card debt is by looking to change your credit card provider. It is very often possible to switch your outstanding credit card balance from one card provider to another in order to obtain an interest free period on the total mount of the balance transferred. This could mean that the full amount repaid each month will be used to reduce the outstanding debt and not merely to repay the interest being charged. What one should watch out for in this respect is that where one continues to use the credit card for purchases, interest may very well be charged on these amounts. Where repayments are subsequently made, it is the interest free balance which will in the first instance be served, meaning that the interest accruing balance continues to grow unchecked. This could in extreme cases leave one worse off than before in the medium to long term.

How to lower your credit card debt may therefore be best approached by seeking to clear it in full by means of a consolidation loan. These loans are usually offered at a significantly lower rate of interest than is charged on credit card balances and will allow the credit cards to be cleared in one fell swoop, the total amount being repaid over a fixed term by means of what are likely to be fixed monthly repayments. Clearly, it is thereafter vital that one does not simply rebuild the credit card debt.

How to lower your credit card debt will therefore depend on your individual circumstances and perhaps credit rating. Regardless of in which way it is tackled, however, the only way to lower your credit card take is to be tough on yourself and take the prescribed course of action as soon as is practically possible.
