Health tips for avoiding declines in brain function as you age

by FA

Health and Fitness should be an important aspect of everyone's lives. People usually get into exercising the body. One mustn't forget about exercising mentally as well. As we age, exercising your becomes more important than ever. As the cliche goes, "If you don't use it, you lose it."

Here are some health tips to avoid decline in brain functions as you age:

1. Do something new everyday, it could be something simple to something more complex. For example, a simple task would be write for a few minutes with your less dominant hand. A more complex task would be take a different route home from work or school. Your brain is ued to routine, and this will give your brain a jolt.

2. Read. Read everything that is available to you. I met an elderly gentleman, age 95, about seven years ago. His daughter-in-law told me that her father-in-law read everything including telephone books. His mind was very sharp. He told me that it was important to read every day, even if it is boring. Reading is food for your brain.

3. Keep a journal. Write down your thoughts and feelings every day. Seeing it visual, will place an image in the brain, allowing preservation of that moment.

4. Crossword puzzles, word searches, Sudoku type games, and puzzles are just some logic exercises. One of my former bosses used to do a crossword puzzle per day. Your brain needs challenges, in order to overcome obstacles and be flexible.

5. Don't forget to reflect about nature, your life, and accomplishments. This will clear distractions. Allowing your brain to rest, relaxed and get refreshed.

6. When you can multi-task, listen to classical or spiritual music. There are studies that state classical, even spiritual, music strengthens brain activity.

7. Don't forget to get enough sleep. Not only is sleep good for your body, but your mind as well.

8. Maintain a healthy diet. This will give your brain nutrients.

9. Go get physically active. Exercising your body will shape you up, and make your mentally alert. The more physically fit you are, the more alert you will become.

10. Converse with people of all ages and backgrounds. Conversations often lead to different opinions, thoughts, and ideas than your own. It is important to learn different points of views, so that you may improve your own point of view.

These are some ideas to help strengthen the brain. More people are living longer due to medical and technological advancements. It is important not to forget about exercising the brain as we age so that we may enjoy life.
