Perhaps if people knew of all the great men and women that were homosexual who sacrificed their lives for us this law would end. When someone is being treated by doctor or being saved from a fire by a fireman do we ask their sexual orientation? Then why is serving in the military different?
Homosexuals do not have a choice. If they did, why would they go through the anguish and pain of not being accepted by their peers, parents, friends, and family. How many homosexuals have committed suicide because they felt they would never be accepted? Think of how it must feel for them to keep their feelings hidden.
God created all of us and as we are all God's children we should learn to accept each others differences. If a person is willing to fight for our country and to protect us, then why does their sexual orientation have to come into play. How would any of us feel if we had something about us that we could not share with others. A person's skin color can be seen visibly and we through much pain and suffering by many have come to be accepted. Just because we cannot see what someone's sexual orientation is should not matter.
As adults most of us remember being teased by children because of being different in some way. In our school system's now, children are taught acceptance. Yet, how can acceptance be taught if adults are not willing to accept people for what they are.
Politics continues to fuel the issue of homosexuals in the military. Remember that politicians are concerned about votes and will follow what some feel and say. What if having a disability kept your child from attending school or finding a job later on in life? These issues have come a long way. There is no difference in not accepting people who have a different sexual orientation than yourself. People in this day and age should through education know better that we must get along with all that we meet.
We may never know as to the large scale of brave men and women who were homosexuals and sacrified their lives for your freedoms. Should we not grant them the same fairness of letting them be free as to showing who they truly are. Lawmakers that want to continue this law contridicate themselves if they say they are for civil rights. When someone joins the military they are doing it for unselfish reasons and many pay the ultimate price. If we the people continue this law we have no rights to ask for justice because of our own creed, color, religion, or differences that we may have from others.
Read your history books and see the pain and suffering so many went through because they were different. Today, we analyze and try to comprehend why a person's religion, color, or gender made a difference in how our ancestor's were treated. Many years from now when our great great grandchildren learn history they will not understand why sexual orientation was even debated and why "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" was even a law.
