A piano teacher, just like any other teacher, is responsible for shaping the musical ability and eventual musical journey a child will take in the future. Choosing a good, skilled and experienced piano is very crucial in this. Most parents who are scouting around for a piano teacher will ask among their friends to find out which teachers are available in the particular area of town they live in. Close distance to the house is important in being able to take the child regularly for piano lessons.
The teacher should have sufficient skill and experience to be able to train the child for many years, and not just the initial learning period. Having one teacher through most of their piano education is very important to help the child develop musically, technically, and to a very high standard.
The teacher should have a good attitude towards children, and also towards the music. Teaching piano purely as a "job" will not help build a relationship with the child. Teachers should be patient, kind and firm, and having a good way of communicating with the child. They should encourage the child to explore the world of music and provide avenues to gain knowledge in creative and fun ways. They should love kids and enjoy working with them!
The teacher should be regular to class, and on time. She or he must have a comprehensive knowledge of the piano method books, to be able to guide the child according to their ability and strengths. Teachers must also encourage the students to attend workshops and concerts to further enhance knowledge.
Teachers should regularly communicate with the parent about the progress of their child. They should be aware of how the lessons are going and also be given ideas and tips on how to help the child at home. Lack of practice, or motivation, and other issues need to be discussed between teacher and parent, so that they can continue to effectively help the child.
Having said that, the parents also have an important role in motivating and helping the child. They should encourage the child to practice regularly, and do their best in the piano lessons. Teachers can equip the child with skills and knowledge, but practicing regularly at home helps to hone and master the skills. My piano teacher did her very best to impart her knowledge with me, but I was only as good as my piano practice! Even the best teacher in the world cannot help a student who does not help them self. Having been a student for many years, and now a teacher, it takes 100% effort from both sides to make it successful! But it is all worth it!
