A Story about Cactuses
Once there lived a man who grew cactuses. He grew them in small pots, and then as the cactuses grew bigger and sturdier, he would grow them in bigger pots. Day by day he looked after the cactuses.
One day, a little boy passed by the man’s cactus farm and decided to go in and do a little exploration.
“Be careful, young lad. The prickles bite,” said the man warmly.
“Why do cactuses have to have prickles?” asked the little boy.
The man looked at the little boy and smiled. “You are a smart boy. If you take care of one, maybe you’ll find out the reason.”
The little boy thought for a moment and exclaimed, “Yes! That would be very good! May I ask my friends to come as well?”
The man agreed, and so the little boy brought along a few of his friends to bring some cactuses home. Before they left his cactus farm, he reminded the little boy and his mates, “If you have any problems with growing your cactuses, you’re always welcome to come and find me.”
The children left the farm in jubilee, carrying their little pots of cactuses. They took their little pots home and showed them to their parents and grandparents, who were happy with it since cactuses were not difficult to take care of. So word spread out that the man was giving out cactuses. More and more parents took their children to the man on the cactus farm, and there were always school children packed at the cactus farm. The man was delighted to have so many people interested in his cactuses, and so he always welcomed every one of them warmly.
And before every child left, he would always add, “If you have any problems with growing your cactuses, you’re always welcome to come and find me.”
Soon the little boy and all the children in town were growing cactuses, and the man had less and less cactuses to take care of. The man now had a different job – there were always little children lining up to ask him questions.
“How many times a day should I water it?” “Does it have to face the sun?” “Can I cut off its prickles? They look ugly.” “What’s inside the cactus?”
The man would always answer every question patiently, yet he was enjoying how the kids crowded around him and sat on his lap.
But actually,
