Air travel has become the most popular form of transportation of our time. We no longer have to sit behind the wheel of a car for hours, but can now be at our destination within minutes, and with very little fatigue. After 9/11 a lot of things changed, and the added security has required everyone to be a bit more diligent in their planning. Then came the economic crisis and suddenly everyone is having to cut back on their baggage. Despite it all, there's no reason that you can't have a satisfying trip if you follow a few easy tips.
Reserve Your Flight
When planning a trip by air, the most important thing is to reserve your flight at least 16 days ahead of your scheduled departure day. Miss that number by even one day (15 days) and you could be paying a lot more for your fare. Holiday flights tend to fill up faster than others, so be sure to reserve your seat far in advance. Consider taking a “Red Eye” (or late night flight). They generally have fewer passengers and offer cheaper fares.
If you use one of the online sites for booking your ticket (like priceline.com or orbitz.com), be sure to do some comparison shopping. All sites are not created equal, and you could miss out on some great deals if you fail to do a little research.
Baggage and Security
Prepare your baggage well ahead of time and double check everything. Most airlines now allow only one bag per ticket, and that second one could cost you a bundle. Call the airline well ahead of your trip to see what their regulations allow and plan accordingly. And don't forget to weigh your bag. Trying to “put all your eggs into one basket” might result in your luggage exceeding the weight limit, and you're back paying another fee.
The best way to get through security in the fastest manner possible is to simply not have any carry ons, but that isn't always possible. The F AA allows liquids and gels no larger than 3 ounces, and they must be encased in a 1-quart zip lock bag (no smaller and no larger). And don't forget your makeup. The same rules apply, and it would be a shame to see it end up in the trash because it exceeds the required size. There is an exception for medication and vitamin supplements, but it is advisable that they remain in their original containers.
You are allowed to take certain snacks on board, but they should be removed from their packaging and placed in clear containers. Again, check with your airline if you are in doubt.
