Excerpt from my work-in-progress novel, Wo Bist Du?
The shadows lengthened as the afternoon wore on. I sighed unhappily at the thought of another day without the object. Hell, I wasn’t even sure what the object really was, but I was sure of the power that it would bring me. I stood at the window to reflect on the ruins of the old city that had once been New York, a measure of my reign. The wall that was constructed as a barricade in the last World War still stood, dividing the upper city from the lower city. I remembered that wall…
I remembered World War Five. Almost two-thirds of the world’s population had been obliterated. There was talk of “the end”. My brother hung from the wall by one arm as the bombs went off in the streets to the west. The explosions had become louder in the last hour and were still drawing nearer. In a surge of adrenaline, he managed to pull himself atop the wall. The riot was only five blocks away by now; we could hear the gunfire as the ground shook.
“Hurry! Grab my hand,” my brother had screamed to me. I shook my head. I wanted to join the fight. A bomb struck the wall as the police continued to drive the civilians back. Chunks of it flew toward me. As I shielded my face, I heard a piercing scream…
I shut the window with a snap. It was all mine now. All mine and my brother was not coming back from the dead to claim it. I smiled with satisfaction at this thought. Just when I thought that I was about to get some peace, Asmodius came flying through the door. “My lord, I think I have just found what you were looking for…”
“The object?”
“Quite possibly. Here, look at the screen,” he said, holding out a small laptop, “These bright pinpricks of light show the intensity of the energy that is being emitted from these locations. The brighter the light, the more energy.”
“And that huge mass there?” I pointed to a large concentration of white light on the map.
“That? That is the largest source of energy we have seen yet. Something giving off that much natural energy could only be –“
“Where is that?”
“My lord, we are having some difficulty with that part…”
“And you have come to me why?” He did not answer, but fell silent in terror. “Asmodius, I have been patient, up ‘till now. Have I not?” He nodded. “Then why do you continue
