TV show reviews: Glee

Glee is a hit series that debuted itscritically acclaimed pilot episode last summer. Buzz started brewing and when it premiered this fall, critics and fans weren't sure if Glee could stand up to the hype. It could. Truly one of the most unique, creative, and fascinating shows ever to grace the tube, Glee is not for your average viewer. Writer/Producer Ryan Murphy, who was beind the WB's Popular and F/X's popular series Nip/Tuck, loves to push the envelope. Glee is no exception. Set in small town Lima Ohio, Glee centers around William McKinley High School and it's nerdy glee club. The show's light tone and vibrant characters can hold up to crazy and serious storylines with ease. Being a musical, a lot of people thought Glee was going to be over the top cheesy and it's really not. The songs are sung realistically, and there is never any random group dancing. The soundtracks have already become hits, and the cast are household names. Currently, it's only been on for half a season, and it's already been released on DVD, which is practically unheard of.

Lead by Broadway veteran Matthew Morrison as the ambitious glee instructor Will Schuester, the rest of the cast falls right into place. Standouts are Broadway darling Lea Michelle as overconfident starlet Rachel Berry. With acting chops and a voice rivaling any of today's pop divas, Michelle has already been nominated for SAG and Golden Globe awards this year. Cory Monteith, a little known Canadian actor, has exploded on the scene as Finn Hudson, sensitive jock who must leverage being popular with being in glee club. He plays Finn with such grace and emotion, it's a wonder to know that Monteith didn't go past the 9th grade.

The most talked about character in the whole series is Hitler-esque cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester, played by Jane Lynch. Delivering classic lines such as, "You think this is hard? Try auditioning for Baywatch and being told their going in another direction. That's hard." The controversial and impossibly funny character has become a hit for fans and critics. It's also makes us wonder why it took Jane Lynch, a popular supporting actress,so long to finally become a household name. All of the actors on Glee serve their purpose well. A gay kid, macho jock, cheerleaders, nerds, and other high school types fill out the rest of the glee club, which has just won sectionals. The show has romance, music, drama, and laughs to go around, and the episodes truly fly by.

For some reason, Fox decided to put the show on hiatus until Spring, so the fans will have to wait to see what happens the rest of the season. Considering the two soundtracks and the first half of the season has been released, the fans will probably be okay. The show has also recently received a SAG award for best cast in a comedy, and a Golden Globe for best Musica or Comedy as well as being on several magazine covers, including EW. Also, Matthew Morrison, Cory Monteith and Mark Salling were part of People's sexiest issue.  Current and broadway tunes are the show's forte, and the show makes old songs popular again, such as Queen's "Somebody to Love." That song could describe Glee, to a tee!
