Best weapons for use against zombies

by Tammy Lee Morris

Created on: February 04, 2010

In the event of a zombie attack or infestation in your community, you want the best weapons available to destroy the undead. The key to destroying a zombie is to destroy the brain and/or separate the head from the body. There are several weapon choices available and all do adequate jobs, but some will work better than others.

Zombie killing weapons can be separated into two categories: Specialty Weapons and Accessible Weapons.

Specialty Weapons

Specialty weapons would include weapons that require forethought and some type of training or knowledge of the use of the weapon. An accessible weapon would be defined as anything that the average person would find available to use as a weapon.

All of these weapons can be rated on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being a "I have nothing else to use and I will probably die but I'll die trying" weapon and 10 being a "Die zombie die!" weapon. This scale shall hereafter be referred to as the Really Dead Zombie Weapon Scale (RDZW Scale).

An example of a specialty weapon would be a crossbow or compound bow, a machete (the average person usually doesn't have a machete sitting around), a sword, various types of guns, land mines, grenades or flame throwers. While all of these weapons will work to destroy a zombie, some work better than others.

A flame thrower, for example, will effectively slow down or even stop a zombie for a time, but unless the fire is hot enough to destroy the brain of the reanimated corpse, you still aren't out of the woods. A flame thrower scores a 3 on the Really Dead Zombie Weapon Scale.

A crossbow or compound bow requires a certain degree of accuracy and experience to score an actual kill against a zombie. While a bow is a great choice for long range zombie killing which allows the archer to dispatch flesheaters from a distance, it is useless in close combat and if you are a poor shot. On the RDZW Scale, a bow rates an 8 if it is in the hands of an experienced archer, and a 2 if the person trying to use it is inexperienced. In fact, an inexperienced person is more likely to hurt themselves or a non-zombie loved one with a bow than they are to actually dispatch a zombie.

Land mines and grenades rate a 9 and 10 on the RDZW Scale because they require no close-contact, inflict maximum exploding damage on a zombie or several zombies. A land mine receives a 9 instead of a 10 because it requires proper placement before use which can be somewhat subjective.

Blades such as machetes and swords rate an 8 on the RDZW Scale. They
