Tips for staying positive when laid off

Staying positive when laid off feels impossible, but it isn't. Even if you are gainfully employed, to plan for possible unemployment would not hurt at all. The economic environment in which we live lends itself to job insecurity. Very few jobs are not touched by economic slumps. Whether or not you are currently unemployed, consider your options for maintaining your spirit.

Networking - With a bit of research, list organizations which you can join that will keep you in touch with others in your field of work. Or, better yet, those that will link you with knowledgeable people in a field you would like to get into. When you enable your name to be known among peers and employers while actively seeking open positions, a feeling of being proactive is satisfying since you are doing something besides sending out resumes. By maintaining a positive attitude, remaining focused on the exact position you seek and keeping tuned in to your surroundings, job opportunities are more apt to find you.

Volunteering - There's no better way to remain positive than to give of your time and energy to causes and organizations that are dear to your heart. Such groups hurt during these difficult economic times and eagerly welcome all the hands they can get. While you believe you are being useful to others, perhaps by pushing patients in wheelchairs, receiving visitors at a reception desk, delivering food to residents, inputting data into a computer, folding and stuffing envelopes, contributing to a newsletter or any other requested task, at the same time, you are improving the odds of being hired. In addition, depending upon the organization, you may be eligible to learn skills through the volunteer position that will be valuable to a future employer. Employers recognize initiative and motivation required as a volunteer, which improve your odds when being considered for a job.

Exercise - Get outdoors and go for a brisk walk, exercise, ski, bicycle or any other form of exercise that will get your blood circulating, maintain energy, keep your mind clear and improve your all over mental well-being. It's important to perform some exercising several times a week.

Sleep - It's imperative that you continue to sleep at least six hours each night in order to retain good health. All body systems and functions are dependent upon sleep. This includes your ability to make decisions and being alert to opportunities as they become available.

Good Eating Habits - Well-balanced meals are necessary to maintain health and immunity, stamina and balanced emotional state. Being laid off is not the time to skip meals or eat junk foods.  Oh, you'll be tempted to eat chocolate and down colas, but they are not smart choices during stressful times.

Lastly, hang with others, who are positive and encouraging. You don't need negativity at this point in your life.
