Earthquake! I have many memories of earthquake since I was born in a place called as ring of fire. In my childhood time, I did not experience with earthquake. Yes, there were some but the impacts were not much. But since Aceh tsunami 2004, earthquake hits our region often and I had an experience with one of quite big earthquake in 2006.
It was in 2006, I just arrived home because the next few days is Ramadhan, a holy month for moslem. So, as a moslem, during Ramadhan we will do fasting, and commonly a day before Ramadhan we do some preparation. A day before Ramadhan, we were shocked by a big earthquake. It was 6 pm when most of people was home. My mom run into the yard and shouted to everyone to go out. All things were shaking, the gates even made noisy sounds. We could not stand properly because felt dizzy, so most of us just sat on the ground. I felt so long until it stopped. I looked around, everyone was outside the building and sat on the ground.
Once it stopped, my brother took his motorcycle and ride it to the shore. He wanted to observe the sea level because our residential area is only about 50 m from the shore. At the moment, he arrived back and informed us that there was significant changing in the sea level, so there is no possibility of tsunami. But, we still made sure everything about an hour by kept standing outside the house. Based on our experiences, a big earthquake will be followed by other earthquakes with less strenght.
The 7.0 RS earthquake at the evening caused severe damage into some buildings and killed one person. So, to anticipate the following eartquakes, we could not sleep well because had to stay awake all night long. A day after was the first day of ramadhan, so we ate early morning and do fasting until the sun sets. In the morning we felt really tired because had not enough sleep. When we wanted to have a nap, suddenly we were suprised by a big hit. Our bodies were shaking hardly, a big earthquake was coming. I shouted to my parents and brother, then asked everyone to go out to the yard.
After previous earthquake, we parked the cars in the yard. Then, we witnessed the cars were shaking hardly. Those moved horizontally and seemed getting faster. My parents tried to hold the fence but it was shaking hardly, so they fell down. I shouted and asked them just to sit on the ground until it over. Same like a day before, my brother rode his motorcycle to observe sea level once the earthquake stopped. He arrived back
