Although the people of Haiti had little, many now have nothing. Watching the evening news brings a tear to my eyes as I view in horror the people of Haiti in such devastation today. Not since the horrific day on September 11th have I felt so panic stricken. I pick up the remote control, click the "OFF" button, and take a deep look at the problems surrounding my own life. It's nothing compared to those that now live in a homeless community - with family members they once laughed with - now dead.
Taking a look around me - at my surroundings - my family - my home, I am quick to complain about the economy, or how hard it is to pay my power bill. But, thinking on the lives of those that have so much less makes me ashamed of my selfishness. Coping with life's problems must entail sharing in the pain of others. When I can write a check (although it may be small) to help the people in Haiti, when I can call a friend in need and let them know that I am there to listen, I am sharing in the pain of others and at the same time, coping with my own problems.
God never said life would be easy, yet He promised hope for eternity to those that believe. Trusting in Him and giving to those that stand in need is not asking much from me. Giving to others allows me to realize that my problems aren't so bad after all. When I give - even if it's a simple phone call of concern, I'm given in return the promise of comfort and peace. God blesses me with the most valuable things in the world and they are not of monetary value - He blesses me with the hope of eternal life with Him as well as the comfort and peace of knowing that He will be there for me through all life's problems.
Coping with life's problems in this day and age seems like a hard task, yet taking in the problems of others may make us realize our problems aren't so bad. There are always problems around us that are worse than our own, realizing that is the first step to learning how to cope with them. Reaching out to help others may pave the way for our questions to be answered, our hopes to be fulfilled, as well as teaching us valuable lessons in life regarding our own problems.
