An ordinary over the counter cough medicine like Robitussin can, in the right amount, provide a cheap drug high. Kids have now found this out and have experimented with it to the point where any local community in North America (Outside Utah) has a small clique of tweakers who can tell your kid how much to use to get high.
DXM has little psychoactive effects when ingested in medically-recommended doses and was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1958. But dextromethorphan does have dissociative, euphoric, and psychedelic qualities when administered in greater doses well above those which are considered medically therapeutic for treating symptoms of the common cold.
Those in the know speak of Robitussin syrup, and say that you need two bottles to "robotrip" (Robitussin-trip). Robitussin cough gels however are said to be better because they are less likely to make a user vomit. with those, at least 20 gels (300 mg) are required to reach a state of inebriation.
The level of inebriation varies based on factors very much including body mass. Sufficive to say that young kids will reach a state of intoxication more readily due to their generally smaller physical size when compared with an adult user.
Conveniently (Suspiciously?), Robitussin cough gels are sold in packages of twenty at a price between $5.47 and $6.49. The individual tweaker will judge whether this price is acceptable. The more enterprising of drug users has bought dextromethorphan in bulk online from indescriminate sources and sold to friends at a profit, a practice now fortunately made illegal by federal law.
The logical precautions now legislated in to law have saved a huge critical mass of young people from getting high and becoming regular users of DXM. But there are always loopholes.
A local amateur industrial chemist can find derivatives of DXM to refine, package and sell. Without government standards enforced this can be extremely dangerous but, for addicts, sadly very much worth the risk.
The image of a hairy, scraggly, menacing looking man in an alleway or a park tends to be the one people associate with the trade in drugs.
Your local drugstore cashier or pharmacist is seen quite differently even though in recent years he or she has dispensed an enormous amount of recreational drugs at very low prices to teenage recreational drug users when those same kids aren't stealing them outright.
The high instances of theft and threat of possible psychological addiction to DXM has caused
