The best places to live in Maryland

by N. G. Nissel

Working in Ellicott City Maryland.

Well, what can I say about Maryland?  I moved to Maryland over a year ago to work for Defense Contractor by the name of ProSync Technology Group.  The company is great, and I had been working with them for about two years.  I had been working in California for my first year of employment, where they let me work remotely.  In my line of work, it seemed to make sense.  But then the inevitable happened, I was awarded more responsibility, so my remote working scenario was not appropriate for what I was handling.  The thought of moving was exciting and daunting at teh same time, because well, I had never really heard much about the state of Maryland. So what did I do? I began the research to learn a little about my soon to be home state of Maryland and all I can say is wow!

Maryland, from what I could see is a great state to live in, and there are some counties close to my work that offer an amazing array of public resources.  I’ve got a young family, so let me share some research about family life in Maryland, from the Howard county perspective.

Let me start with the schools in Howard County, MD.  The school system in Howard County Maryland has been consistently ranked in the top tiers for the last twenty years.  When I saw this online, I was really excited because I have two young children that will be starting kindergarten soon, and well, if I don’t have to pay for private school, then it’s just that more I can put away for their college fund (if they choose not to go to college - it’ll go towards my new sports car fund when I retire).  The rankings for elementary, middle and high schools can be found at sites like psk12.com.  And it’s extremely reassuring to know the quality of the schools in Howard County because it affects so many other areas of life such as home values, community programs, crime rates, and more.  Don’t get me wrong.  There are some sacrifices that needed to be made, such as the cost of living or if you’re moving from a warm climate, be prepared for some cold weather and the occasional white Christmas. But if you’re okay with unusual weather, then you’ll be happy with all the county has to offer.

The one nice thing about quality schools and great community programs is that home values tend to be stable.  The bad thing about Howard County is that home vales are stable, but
