Tips for raising children on a military base:
I am a base brat, born and raised. I have lived on many bases in my life time. The same community values are attributed to all military bases. This makes raising a family as well as moving to a new area which happens often, much easier. As a mother I know that raising a child is one of the toughest jobs out there. So there are bonuses to living in such a community.
Meet your neighbours: your military neighbours are going through the same as you. Your neighbour is also acting as both parents when their spouse is away. Why not work together and help each other by sharing meals or offer babysitting nights. Every parent needs a break or help. Offer first, your neighbour will be thankful and will repay the favour. Have you ever heard the saying, “it takes a community to raise a child”?
You and your family attend community functions: The military always has things going on. I seem to remember family days, winter carnivals, spring flings, brunches at the mess, etc. All of these functions tend to be for the entire family. This allows people of all ages to enjoy the company of others rather than being cooped up inside. And they are free entertainment for our families. As a mother, I now see how expensive it is to take my children out to the movies or to go to an arcade.
Military resource center: the Military Family Resource centers are a community center for families. The hold specialist to help with many military spousal needs. They have emergency care givers to help you with your children when your military spouse is away. There are mommy and me/daddy and me programs where you can meet and greet with other parents and children in the area. Helps you and your child socialize. They have community events such as dances or after school hang outs for teens to keep them out of trouble. Movie nights for the kids. Babysitting programs that are free or at a low cost. Programs to help teach kids how to write resumes and interview for jobs.
Take advantage of the free programs for military families
Cheaper sport costs: Every base has a gym, pool and rink on their grounds. They offer a cheaper admission for military families. This will allow your kids to stay active and join after school sports at a cheaper cost. It has been reported that active children are less likely to get into trouble with the law.
Many of my tips talk about working with your community to raise your child. It is hard to do it alone. Knowing that the person next to you is going through what you go through when your spouse is away, why not help each other out.
