It was Labor Day and Marcus and Mary were happy to have the day off. They had been married a little over six months and were glad they would be able to spend more time together on the holiday. Then suddenly, it dawned on both of them they had nothing planned.
“What do we do now?” Mary asked Marcus, who thought for a moment
.“I don’t know,” he said, puzzled. “I assumed we had something planned."
”“Not that I know of,” Mary said, then she thought for a moment.
“I just assumed one of our parents would invite us over-a big holiday like this."
”“Yea, I know. Normally, they have a nice barbecue and picnic for the family."
”“My family does, too,” said Mary. “And we always have potato sack races, pin the tail on the donkey and bobbing for apples."
”“My family has all of that, too,” Marcus answered. “How about where you have to run with a spoon in your mouth and try to keep a potato balanced on it?” Marcus asked her. Mary thought for a moment.
“No, we never did that. But we did have a three-legged race one year.” The two of them stood dumbfounded in the middle of their living room for awhile before Marcus spoke
.“Maybe our parents are mad at us,” he said
.“Well why would they be mad at us?” Mary answered, now suddenly concerned. “I just talked to my mother last night.”
“I talked to my mother last night, too. Everything seemed fine.”
“Everything seemed fine with my mother, too.” They both tried to figure out some reason they weren’t invited, but after awhile, they realized they better find something else to do.
“I guess we could go to the beach, or maybe a movie,” said Mary
.“No, I don’t want to go anywhere too crowded. I don’t want to get hassled by a big mob somewhere on a holiday. I’d like to go somewhere where there’s just a small amount of people.” Mary thought for a moment, trying to think of some location where there wouldn’t be a large gathering.
“I know,” she said. “We could go to that new Woody Allen movie.”
Before Marcus could answer, the doorbell rang. It was their next door neighbor, Honey, inviting them across the hall where she was having a party with her industry friends. Honey probably wasn’t her real name and the industry she and her friends were in wasn’t necessarily that reputable. But she was friendly enough to her young newlywed friends and they were happy to go over and spend the afternoon at her apartment. Not every activity that went on at that barbecue was legal, but Marcus and Mary were not easily offended and had a nice time. Plus the food was good.
