My love affair with Los Angeles started as a kid watching tv and movies. It all seemed so glamourous. All the beautiful movie stars and singers lived there. I am a child of 60's and 70's television, The Partridge Family and the Brady Bunch lived there. It seemed perfect to a wide-eyed kid from northern Indiana.
My first trip to L.A. was in 1982 after a short, young marriage. My ex in-laws lived in Palos Verdes and invited me for a stay. I was mesmerized from the first landing at LAX. They showed me all the sites of Hollywood, the beaches and driving up the coast. I was hooked and decided to move there. By that time, I was living in Florida, so in 1984 I packed it up and drove cross-country to the City of Angels. I lived in Redondo and Hermosa Beaches for about 9 months. The reality of the cost of living and other issues convinced me to leave L.A. and head back to Florida. It made me sad to leave but I was just too young to hack it with a small child and I knew it.
In past decade I have been fortunate enough to travel to L.A. a half-dozen times for various events in my life. I attended the Daytime Emmy's twice and actually walked the red carpet! That was a big deal for this wide-eyed kid who watched those awards shows with such wonder. I have come to know L.A. a little bit more every time I go. It is so vast that there is always something new to see. Griffith Park is a wonderful place to get lost in. I saw a show at the Troubadour which has such a rich history of rock music. There is no where like Venice Beach in the world! I have been to some of the best restaurants anywhere. Beverly Hills and Rodeo Drive are fun for window shopping. Walking the Santa Monica Pier or going to look for great vinyl at Amobe Records. Of course Hollywood Boulevard and the Sunset Strip are so chock full of Hollywood history. The weather is great and you can go to the beach or the mountains in an hour.
I am getting ready for another trip to L.A. this year and am excited to find out what I will see that I haven't seen before. I have managed to collect some great friends there and I just know they will take me somewhere new and exciting. One of my friends mentioned Laguna, I haven't been there yet. I had always thought that I would end up living in Los Angeles and you know, I still just might.
