Heather Graham affecting an English accent? Heather Graham cannot find a man to impregnate her? Heather Graham needs assistance in the boson department? There are items that viewers have to swallow in acceptance in "Miss Conception," a lame British romantic comedy directed by Eric Styles. The casting of Graham could possibly have worked had she played an American rather than a Brit. Despite a somewhat passable accent, Graham is simply "too American" because she plays a typical Heather Graham role albeit with an unnecessary accent. Additionally Canadian actress Mia Kirschner also sports an English accent as Graham's best friend. What the producers could not find any good looking genuine British actresses? The result would have been the same: a so-so movie never seeing the light of day in theaters and going directly to DVD and cable.
Although not her best work, Graham's fans should be pleased because the actress is cute, bubbly and looks great. There is no nudity which might saved the movie but Graham has always looked spectacular in underwear. She plays Georgina Salt who owns and runs a construction company (!?!) and lives with documentary filmmaker Zak (Tom Ellis). After visiting the newborn baby of Zak's sister, Georgina decides her biological clock is ticking and demands a baby from Zak who balks at the idea thus causing a break up. Georgina announces if Zak will get her pregnant then she will find someone who will.
Zak goes off to film a documentary with his backer's annoying yet sexy daughter Alexandra (Ruth Gedmintas) which naturally leads to misunderstandings. Georgina and best friend Clem (Kirschner) hatch a dumb plan of action to get Georgina pregnant during a two week period of ovulation and this sets up the "comedy." When gay fashion designer friend Justin (Orlando Seale) whips up a fashion ensemble for Georgina to impress, he hands her some implants to pad out her bosom saying it will help. That might have been funny with another actress but not one with Graham's well displayed attributes.
The most amusing set up is Clem's idea of going to a funeral only attended by men and crashing the wake. Georgina's eyes light up the sight of a sea of hunky men but the punchline was telegraphed in advance: they are all gay! Isn't that hilarious! The gay joke is employed not once but thrice as a desperate Georgina seeks a "donation" from Justin. These scenes are not only lame but preposterous because all a woman who looks like Graham has to do is snap her fingers and the men come running. And let's even comment on the absurd not in a good way sperm bank sequence. There is the predictable ending. "Miss Conception" is aptly titled.
