Who is the Antichrist?

Revelation 13:16: And it puts under compulsion all persons, the small and the great, the rich and the poor, the free and the slaves, that they should give these a mark in their right hand or upon their forehead, (17): and that nobody might be able to buy or sell except a person having the mark, the name of the wild beast, or the number of its name. (18): Now here is where wisdom comes in; let the one that has the intelligence calculate the number of the wild beast, for it is a man’s number, and the number is six hundred and sixty-six.

Because of the complexity of the issue, what follows are educated calculations of possibilities and should not be deemed to be accepted calculations; these are my own interpretations and my own calculations.

During the early days of Christianity the organisation existed as an underground revolutionary religious sect, seeking to break away from the strict and many unacceptable practises of Judaism. During this time it is believed that members of the group, afraid of being discovered by either the Priests of Israel or their Roman overlords, devised several secret codes in order to continue to spread the word of their modern religion.

One such code concerns the use of numbers, where (for example) each letter of the alphabet is assigned its own number. However, it should be noted that the overall significance of the number 666 lies within the Christian religion alone and may have no bearing on any other religion or national group. Indeed the number does not arise in Jewish or other religions, and for example in the religion of Judaism the number 666 would be calculated to be 18; (6+6+6=18). This example is highlighted in this way; the Jewish numerical value of Vav is 6, therefore, 666 would be said to be represented by Vav-Vav-Vav. As indicated above, Vav-Vav-Vav would be equivalent to 6+6+6=18.

So in order to solve this mystery of the number we must stay within the bounds of Christianity and view the perspective though its eyes. In early Greek texts we find that 666 would be calculated in this way; each letter holds a value, so therefore, for example, 666 could be represented by four numbers whose total sum adds up to 666. 400+200+60+6 = 666.

Using this method, nearly everyone, from Nero to the Pope has been associated with the beast of Revelation, and the number 666. The reason for this is because of the system used to determine the number. It is more than possible to associate the number of the beast
