PINNED
I could follow this man ‘til we reach the end
Or I could walk beside him
I could be his mistress or be his friend
I could hold him ‘til his heart would mend
I could give him myself, or myself defend
My strength or my resentment lend
So which is it to be?
Which is it to be?
Should I close my ears and close my eyes?
Should I put on my routine disguise?
Should I smile when I’m sad and feign my desire?
Should I kneel with his slippers by his feet at the fire?
Is this what he would seek to inspire?
Is this how it should be?
Is this how it should be?
He’s a man with his many faults like me
He’s a man and a saint and a sinner, all three
He’s made his mistakes and he’s set them free
But he’s balked at my claims of liberty
And deep in his soul is a lonely place
That hides when I try to see its face
Then it sinks away without a trace
Though it longs for love and it longs for grace
And I ask why this should be.
I ask why should this be?
Will you change your heart and change your mind?
Is there kindness there for me to find?
Are you cold as a stone?
See less than the blind?
Are you pinned like a specimen butterfly?
That moves in a breeze as if in the sky
Look closer and now you see
It’s a trick of the mind
Is that what you would be?
Is that what you would be?
So give me your heart
And give me your word, if you must
I’ll take you back home
If you give me your trust
You won’t be alone
If you love me for free
I’ll love you as well
I’ll love you as strong
And you’ll find that I was yours all along,
I was yours all along. I was your all along.
And you’ll find I was yours all along.
