Having a job is a positive way for teens to achieve their desire for greater autonomy while also exploring various possible career paths and earning money for schooling and other expenses. Some of the best jobs for teens are the old tried and true jobs their parents had when they were teens.
Having a paper route: Yes, we still have papers, though circulation has gone down somewhat. Having a paper route is still a good job for teens who can do this in the early morning or after school. It may require one to have a bicycle or car, though.
Walking beans or detassling corn: Believe it or not, this was a popular job when I was a kid growing up in the Midwest. It's hard work, but also fun to do with your friends. Also, the time frame for this job is a fairly short window. So it won't interfere with a teen enjoying some other activities during the summer as well.
Babysitting and Mother's helper jobs: So many working parents need reliable babysitters or assistants around the house. Some home ec departments also give classes in babysitting and first aid that can give you an edge in getting these jobs.
Summer camp counselor: This is a really fun job for which you might have to serve an apprenticeship before you become a full-fledged paid counselor. But there are some hidden benefits: colleges love to see this on your application.
Life guard: You will need to become certified. The American Red Cross offers classes and will certify you. This is a fairly high paying job. Also, life guards are needed at both beaches and indoor public swimming pools.
Golf caddy: This is a fun job for the golf enthusiast. You might even get to caddy during some tournaments and get some great tips in addition to your salary.
Bussing tables and working on a food prep line: the tips may not be great, but the opportunities are numerous, and it can be fun working with other kids your own age.
Tutoring: If you are an A student or have some special skill in music, sports, foreign language, or some other area, you can earn some very good money tutoring. This has another advantage in that you can plan tutoring hours around your other responsibilities.
Cashier: Grocery stores, retail stores, and other businesses small and large need cashiers. This job can be learned on the job. Also, some businesses might welcome teens who will work part time and, therefore, not have to be given benefits.
Holiday part time work: Often stores like to offer gift wrapping services and have more sales people available during the holidays. This is a good option for a teen who has limited time during the year for a part-time job during the entire school year.
Writing for Helium: You may not earn huge money, but you will hone your writing skills and have a greater advantage when applying to colleges and pursuing jobs that require excellent communications skills.
Whatever job you choose, don't forget that the most important job you have is getting the education and training for whatever career path you choose. Entry level jobs don't pay huge bucks, but sometimes they can teach you skills and help you develop a supportive network that will be invaluable when you pursue college and careers.
