Passion Fruit, most people have heard about it but few really know what it is. Is it a fruit that comes from a tree, shrub or vine? Why is it green in some places, yellow in others and even purple somewhere else? Why is it called Passion fruit, do people become passionate after eating it, about it, or what? Time to take a look at what Passion Fruit really is and answer some questions!
Passion fruit is a New World fruit found throughout Central and South America, and the Caribbean. there are even a few native species found in the southeastern United States. It is a climbing vine and there are hundreds of different types and sizes. Some grow large and can cover fences whereas others, such as the ink berry passion fruit, are tiny and grow in the crevices of rocks, You may see passion fruit hanging on trees or shrubs, but that is because the vines are climbing on those plants!
Why is it green in one place, yellow in another and purple somewhere else? Because there are a lot of different types of passion fruits and they are all different! It is like apples, look at the diversity in even a small fruit stand. You will also have different strains that grown best in different areas, passion fruit is the same way. Different soils, lighting and strain create different colors. Try to check out the images on Google and you will gain an appreciation for the variety involved!
Why is it known as passion fruit? Sorry guys and gals, passion fruit has no known effect upon the libido! While it makes some nice drinks and mixes well with rum, people become no more passionate about eating this fruit than any other. It was names by the Catholic Missionaries that traveled with the Spanish Conquistadors to the New World. They used it to discuss and explain the passion of Christ and his death. It is to most a stretch of the imagination, but seems to be the reason for the name! There are more details about this in Wikipedia. The Passion Fruit flowers are beautiful and come in a variety of shapes and colors!
Passion Fruit comes from a vine, there are several varieties and colors and it was named for the passion of Christ rather than filling one with passion!
