Automotive maintenance essentials

As an Automotive Technician, I was surprised by some of the articles regarding the subject. So, I decided to write my own.

Just about any car today can reach 100,000 miles without major difficulty, given adequate care, obviously. But, if you're hoping to push past the 200,000 mark, then servicing your car regularly is a must. Most, if not all, cars have their recommended service schedule printed in the Owner's Manual. Many people don't know this, but it tells you what to do and when. If you follow these recommendations, you should be fine. But, here's a general list of things that should be done:

Engine oil and filter changes. On most cars, this should happen every 3000 miles. Look in the manual, some cars can go longer.
Air filter should be checked regularly, and replaced at least once a year.
Fuel filter. Most people don't even touch these. They should be replaced every year.
Transmission fluid and coolant should be flushed every 50,000-60,000 miles. Your manual will tell you exactly when.
Spark plugs (tune up) on some cars is at 30,000. Some GM vehicles say 100,000 miles. Once again, check your manual.
PCV should be replaced every year.
Don't fill up your brake fluid. This is a closed system, much like your coolant. If it's low, there is a reason. Check your brakes. If your brakes are worn out, the fluid will appear to be "low". You shouldn't be loosing brake fluid, unless you have a leak. This will become evident very quickly.
Check belts and hoses for cracks. Some belts should be replaced every 60,000 miles. Some can go longer.

I'm sure I left some things out, but my point is, follow the manual. Different cars require different service intervals. It's best to follow the manufacturer recommendations, because they are the ones who designed the car, and they know what it can handle.

However, the most important thing is how you drive. If you want your car to run for years, don't push it too hard.
