The importance of character

An individual’s character will say more about them than anything they possess on the outside.  Having perfect hair or clothing is superficial but does not represent you the way your character on the inside does.  For Christians, good character is of the utmost importance.  We speak the words of our hearts and mind and these are the words and deeds that men shall see and judge you by.  Setting an example with your life can be more important than any word you speak about salvation to a non believer.

Luke 6: 45 “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.”   How many times have you caught yourself speaking without thought?  If our thoughts and minds are not where they should be then the words come out angry, wrong, or hurtful to those around us.  One of the biggest evils that humans engage in is gossip.   This is not in good biblical character as we are not to judge or condemn others.  We are also to treat them the way we want to be treated.  Telling rumors or spreading information about others that is confidential is one of the most hurtful things we do and tears down our character and our reputation.  It can break hearts, relationships, and build walls between us and those that hear our gossip.  This is only one example of how when our hearts and mind are in the proper place with God, we can build our character and bear good fruit for his kingdom.  Refrain from even hearing gossip about your neighbor.  Politely tell the one talking that you would prefer not to talk about Susie while she is not there.

Romans 5: 3-5 “And not only so but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”  Another version of this verse says, “We also have joy with our troubles, because we know that these troubles produce patience.  And patience produces character, and character produces hope.  And this hope will never disappoint us, because God has poured out his love to fill our hearts.”  Even in troubled times we can build our character for his glory!  We
