If you have a dog, by now you must have learnt that even the gentlest and mildest of dogs can bite and snarl if threatened and in pain. A dog if traumatized can prove to be a serious threat causing serious injury as it is equipped with strong set of teeth and jaws. If you are faced by such a threat your dog can prove harmful to you, your family or other people too. However if you learn how to muzzle your dog, you can stop your dog from becoming a serious threat to others around.

Things you will Require for Muzzling Your Dog:

When muzzling your dog you should be equipped with a fabric leash. If you do not have a fabric leash use a 3 feet long fabric or soft rope.

Steps to Muzzling a Dog:

Follow the following steps to make your dog muzzle:

First make a large loop in the center of a leash, fabric or rope by tying a slightly loose knot.

Hold each end of the leash in each hand and stand behind your dog. Slip this loop over your dog’s lower jaw and muzzle. It should come just behind your dog’s nose. Secure it with a slightly loose knot. The dog’s snout should come just under the half knot.

Stretch the two ends under the chin of your dog and just behind its ears. You should do this without loosening the loop against its snout. Now cross the ends of the leash that are coming under its snout and pull them behind its head.

Now tie these two ends together tightly behind your dog’s ears. You can sue a bow tie so that when required it can be removed easily and efficiently.

Warnings and Tips Regarding Making a Dog Muzzle:

For emergency muzzle, you can use scarves, pair of pantyhose, gauze, necktie or a bandana. They will make good materials for muzzling a dog.
Never muzzle your dog for long periods of time. Make it as short as possible as dogs can come under a lot of stress as they pant and it can over heat the dog as it can not open its mouth when muzzled. This can prove fatal in some dogs. So be very careful with muzzling your dog. You can ensure your dog’s safety by making sure that it can breathe through its mouth and nose even with an emergency muzzle on it.
