Indeed, school is very important for the well-being of children and for society as a whole. School infuses children with wholesome knowledge and education that is beneficial for their lives and their future. While school is a substantial contributor to a child’s education, a child is also necessitous of education from their parents, and constructive influence from other members of their households. Although school teaches children an abundance of lessons, there are essentialities that can only be taught through experience within the family.
Initially, school hours used to be short and adequate for the children to learn what they need to know. In the past, children only had to attend school for a few hours a day, and were mostly taught things they were actually going to use in real life. Today however, school can be strenuous, and the normal student spends about seven hours a day, and five days week—which equals to about 35 hours a week. In addition, students have an average of 1.5 hrs of homework for each of these five days, which increases the total hours spent for school hours to a total of 42.5 hours—higher than most full time jobs. Now some individuals are starting to think about increasing the school year. Will that be beneficial for students?
It really does seem like a very good idea to increase the school year for students. This is because students will have more time to learn in school, and they will have more opportunity to augment their knowledge about some fundamental educational subjects. However, how effective is this idea? Will it really educate the students? Well first all, it really depends on how exactly this is going to be done. If they increase the length of school years, but decrease the number of years student has to spend in school, the idea is tenable.
This will compensate for the increase in school year length. Now, is it beneficial if the school year length increase and the number years student spend in school remains the same?—No! This will put more pressure on students, and will actually be a burden to them. Students will have less time to associate with their family, which is a crucial source of their education. In school, students are mostly educated by the state, not the rudimentary morals that are often taught by parents. Doing this will make students less dependent on their parents, and this will have negative effects on society.
