Fire at home: Being prepared

A lot of people unfortunately live by the edict that it will happen to someone else, this is possibly right in nearly every occasion, but isn't a good way to live. Emergencies and accidents are named as such because they happen beyond people's control and are rare, even so its worth being prepared in case. Prevention is the best plan, but if things go wrong then be prepared to deal with the situation as best you can. One of the worst home based problem is fire, it kills massively and causes millions of pounds or dollars of damage every year. To prevent fires there are plenty of things to do such as install smoke detectors and keep an eye on hazards, if this fails then be ready for fire.

IN CASE OF FIRE

If you are alerted of a fire by smoke alarm or by another means be careful how you investigate the source. Before opening any shut doors feel that the surface isn't hot, if it is it may mean that opening the door will release flames at you. If there is smoke and any degree of flame then call emergency services, they would be happier to be called to a minor incident then arrive late to something out of control. Smoke kills quickly and every second is crucial in the escape and survival from a fire.

IF NOT SURE GET OUT

If there is a lot of smoke and flames then its advisable to get out and call for help, it is easier to rebuild a property then resurrect the dead. Use any doors or windows that are safe to leave by, even better - have fire escape windows installed in order to give a safe way out. Even better is to do a fire drill at home with any members, possibly blindfolded as smoke will nearly blind you in large quantities. If you can, plan a route using touch and while crawling, where the better air would be in a fire, you will find your way out in the same way the fire brigade will search.

FIGHTING BACK

Unless very sure you can safely fight the fire don't, get out and allow the professionals to sort it. Use water if no electricity is involved or no burning fat, use fire extinguishers if correct for fire and use fire blankets where recommended. If you have fire fighting equipment, then make sure you are aware what can be used where.
